Matthew is a dedicated community organizer, civic leader, and former federal Member of Parliament who has spent his career fighting for working people, along side rank and file union activists, on the picket line, and in the House of Commons.

As the NDP’s Labour Critic, Matthew was a tireless champion for stronger collective bargaining rights, a ban on scab labour, and justice for workers in precarious and federally regulated sectors. He stood shoulder-to-shoulder with unions across the country, earning the trust of workers and the labour movement alike.

Prior to his federal election from 2018-2019, he proudly worked with ATU Canada and President John Di Nino to advance the National Public Transit Strategy, helping lead ATU’s political organizing efforts from coast to coast. His time supporting ATU wasn’t just professional, it was personal, rooted in a shared belief that public transit is a public good, and transit workers are essential to a just, accessible, and climate-resilient future.

Matthew has spoken at conventions and gatherings of the Canadian Labour Congress, provincial federations of labour, and countless affiliate unions, always bringing a message rooted in solidarity, strategy, and the power of organizing.

He also served as Critic for Ethics, Access to Information and Privacy, where he exposed government contracting scandals and pushed back against corporate corruption.

But no matter where he’s gone or what role he’s held, Matthew has never lost sight of who he serves: the working class.
